Goyang Woman Pleads Guilty to Abandoning Her 4-Year Old Child on Back Country Road

I feel horrible for this little girl who must have been terrified being dropped off and abandoned by her mom in the middle of country road:

A 35-year-old woman admitted to abandoning her 4-year-old daughter on a deserted road on a freezing cold night during a court hearing on her child abuse case Monday.

A 25-year-old man, known as the woman’s acquaintance, also pleaded guilty to taking part in her act of child abuse in the hearing at the Incheon District Court in Incheon, 50 kilometers west of Seoul.

The woman, whose identity was withheld, was indicted on child abandonment and neglect charges after abandoning her young daughter on a back road near her daycare center in Goyang, northwest of Seoul, at about 10 p.m. on Nov. 26 last year, when the temperature dropped below zero.

The man, who allegedly became acquainted with the woman through an internet game, was also indicted for taking part in her child abuse.

They are accused of having gone to a nearby motel after getting the child out of the man’s car and leaving her on the deserted road.

The woman told police earlier parenting was difficult for her and her acquaintance suggested abandoning the child.

Parents Face Murder Charges for Death of Their 16 Month Old Daughter

It is pretty horrible that someone would abuse a 16 month old child to death:

The adoptive mother of a 16-month-old baby girl leaves the Seoul Southern District Court after attending a hearing on an arrest warrant over the girl’s death on Nov. 11, 2020. (Yonhap)

The horrific death of a 16-month-old allegedly abused by her adoptive parents has triggered an outpouring of grief nationwide and anger over many missed chances to save her.

The girl, named Jung-in, died at a hospital in western Seoul on Oct. 13, hours after she was taken to the hospital by her adoptive mother.

The National Forensic Service concluded that she died of severe abdominal injuries and internal bleeding that were caused by “strong external force applied on her back.” Signs of prolonged abuse, such as fractured bones and bruises, were also found on her once-healthy body.

Last month, prosecutors charged the adoptive mother, surnamed Jang, with child abuse resulting in death, emotional abuse and neglect. She has been in pretrial detention. The adoptive father was charged with child abuse and neglect.

Jung-in’s case has gained renewed national attention after SBS, a local broadcaster, aired an investigative report over the weekend to reveal the utter brutality of the abuse done to the toddler, and how child welfare agencies and police have squandered golden chances that could have saved her life.

South Korea to Begin Child Abuse Inspections of Elementary School Children After Murder

Elementary school students in South Korea will be facing increased scrutiny from teachers for signs of child abuse this year:

South Korea will check all 480,000 children set to enter elementary school this year for signs of child abuse, the Education Ministry said Sunday (Feb 5).

“If soon-to-be enrollees are unaccounted for, failing to show up at preliminary meetings organised by their designated schools, we will pay a visit to their houses and check their living situation,” said an official from the Education Ministry.

This marks the first time that the government conducts a nationwide inspection of pre-school children, after a high-profile case last year revealed a loophole in the current education system to detect child abuse cases.

In February 2016, the body of seven-year-old boy named Shin Won Young, who had been locked up and beaten for three months by his stepmother – was found months after his death.  [Strait Times]

Six-Year Old Girl Killed By Adopted Parents Who Tied Her Up In Duct Tape

This is just a horrible story coming out of Pocheon, north of Seoul:

A middle-aged couple was arrested Sunday for allegedly binding their 6-year-old adopted daughter with duct tape for 17 hours and, when she suffocated, burning her body on a mountain.

The couple denied intentionally killing the girl and said she was being punished for being “too gluttonous.”

Police requested a pre-trial detention warrant Monday for the 47-year-old man and his 30-year-old wife on charges of murder, physical abuse, as well as the mutilation and abandonment of a dead body.

A 19-year-old woman living with the couple in Pocheon, Gyeonggi, was also apprehended on the same charges. Police identified the teenager as a daughter of the father’s close friend, who allegedly took some – if not equal – part in the crime.

The three suspects said during police questioning that they habitually struck the child with their bare hands or a fly swatter because she didn’t obey orders.

Last Wednesday night, they allegedly bound the girl up with duct tape and left home, returning 17 hours later to find her struggling to breathe.

The adoptive mother claimed she performed CPR on the child before she took her last breath. The three moved the body to the couple’s car Friday and drove to a nearby mountain. They allegedly burned the body to hide the evidence.   [Joong Ang Ilbo]
