Report Claims Kim Jong-un Has Banned North Koreans from Using the Name of His Daughter

Not only has he supposedly banned the name “Ju-ae”, but has also forced people already with that name to change it:

This image captured from Korean Central Television shows a child presumed to be North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s daughter, Ju-ae, mounted on a white house during a military parade in Pyongyang on Feb. 8, 2023. (Yonhap)

North Korean state TV on Sunday aired footage of leader Kim Jong-un’s daughter, Ju-ae, riding a white horse in an apparent display of her legitimacy as a descendant of the ruling family’s “Paekdu bloodline.”

In the footage on Korean Central Television, Ju-ae is seen mounted on a white horse during Wednesday’s massive military parade staged in Pyongyang to mark the 75th founding anniversary of the North’s armed forces.

The white horse is symbolic of the Kim family, and leader Kim Jong-un was famously seen riding one on Mount Paekdu in October 2019, eight months after the Hanoi summit between Kim and then U.S. President Donald Trump broke down.

Meanwhile, U.S. broadcaster Radio Free Asia quoted sources as saying Saturday that North Korean authorities are forcing people named Ju-ae to change their names.

North Korea previously prohibited the use of the same name as all the former and current leaders — Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il and Kim Jong-un, the broadcaster said.

By the way Yonhap, that picture does not look like Kim Jong-un’s daughter.

Kim Jong-un Visits Army Barracks with Daughter on 75th Anniversary of the Founding of North Korean Armed Forces

Kim Jong-un seems to really be enjoying bringing his daughter around with him on these visits now:

This image, captured from footage of North Korea’s state-run Korean Central Television on Feb. 8, 2023, shows North Korean leader Kim Jong-un (front-R) posing for a photo with his daughter, known as Ju-ae (C), and his wife Ri Sol-ju at a banquet the previous day to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the armed forces. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has visited the barracks of the country’s general-grade officers together with his daughter to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the armed forces, according to state media Wednesday.

In a speech at a banquet Tuesday following his visit, Kim praised the Korean People’s Army (KPA) as “the strongest troops in the world,” according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

“For the everlasting peace, prosperity and development on this land, we’ve developed great and absolute power while enduring so many sufferings and pain,” Kim said, apparently pointing to the North’s nuclear force.

Kim Jong-un Called Chinese “Liars” and Prefers Keeping in U.S. Military in South Korea to Prevent Chinese Dominance

Some interesting quotes from Kim Jong-un in Mike Pompeo’s new book:

North Korea and its leader Kim Jong-un are not bothered at all by the U.S. military presence in South Korea, former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo argued in a memoir published Tuesday.

They rather consider U.S. troops in South Korea as a protection against Chinese dominance, according to Pompeo.

Pompeo said the North Korean leader had raised the issue of U.S.-South Korea joint military exercises during their first meeting in Pyongyang.

“I insinuated that he was a little hypocritical to get worked up about them, given how his planes and rockets could within minutes, or perhaps seconds, lay waste to the city of Seoul, South Korea, a city of ten million people and only a few dozen kilometers from the demilitarized zone (DMZ),” he wrote. (…..)

Pompeo said he had also told Kim that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) had “consistently told the United States that American forces leaving South Korea would make Chairman Kim happy.”

“At this, Kim laughed and pounded on the table in sheer joy, exclaiming that the Chinese were liars,” wrote Pompeo.

“He (Kim) said that he needed the Americans in South Korea to protect him from the CCP, and that the CCP needs the Americans out so they can treat the peninsula like Tibet and Xinjiang,” he added.

Pompeo also offered to U.S. policymakers: “expanding U.S. missile and ground capabilities on the Korean Peninsula won’t bother the North Koreans at all.”

You can read more at the link, but Kim also told Pompeo that he was willing to denuclearize which I have never believed. So saying that he doesn’t mind the US military presence in the ROK just may just be something Kim may have thought Pompeo wanted to hear.

Pompeo’s New Book Describes Meeting He Had with Kim Jong-un

Yes this would have been an unconventional way to begin an introduction:

Former Secretary of State and CIA Director Mike Pompeo wrote in his new memoir that his secret meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jung Un in 2018 began with a “joke about assassination.”

“This small, sweating, evil man tried to break the ice with all the charm you would expect from a mass murderer. ‘Mr. Director,’ he opened, ‘I didn’t think you’d show up. I know you’ve been trying to kill me,’” Pompeo’s memoir, which Fox News obtained a copy of, reads.

“My team and I had prepared for this moment, but ‘a joke about assassination’ was not on the list of ‘things he may say when he greets you.’ But I was, after all, director of the CIA, so maybe his bon mot made sense,” he added.

Pompeo’s memoir, “Never Give an Inch: Fighting for the America I Love,” is set to be released on Jan. 24 amid speculation that the former Trump Cabinet secretary could announce a 2024 presidential run. Pompeo said last month that he will announce his 2024 plans this spring.

In the first chapter, obtained by Fox News, Pompeo writes his meeting with Kim was a “complete secret” and his goal was to “correct the failed efforts of the past that had not eliminated North Korea’s nuclear weapons of mass destruction.” After the North Korean leader opened with an assassination joke, Pompeo said he responded in kind.

“I decided to lean in with a little humor of my own: ‘Mr. Chairman, I’m still trying kill you.’ In the picture taken seconds after that exchange, Kim is still smiling. He seemed confident that I was kidding,” Pompeo said in the memoir.

Why is Kim Jong-un Showing Off His Daughter?

The smart people keep saying Kim Jong-un is showing his daughter off to emphasize hereditary power transition:

This undated photo provided on Nov. 27, 2022, by the North Korean government shows North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, left, and his daughter, right, walking to a photo session with those involved in the recent launch of what it says a Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile, at an unidentified location in North Korea. Independent journalists were not given access to cover the event depicted in this image distributed by the North Korean government. The content of this image is as provided and cannot be independently verified. Korean language watermark on image as provided by source reads: “KCNA,” which is the abbreviation for Korean Central News Agency.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s disclosure of his daughter in recent public events was likely an attempt to show his people that one of his children would one day inherit his power in what would be the country’s third hereditary power transfer, South Korea’s spy service told lawmakers Thursday.

Kim publicly took his daughter to three events in the past few months: a missile launch site, a photo session with weapons scientists and a touring of a missile facility. State media called her Kim’s “most beloved child,” sparking outside debate over whether she’s being groomed as his heir apparent, though she’s believed to be around 9 or 10 years old.

In a closed-door Parliamentary committee meeting, the National Intelligence Service said it assessed that by taking his daughter to public places, Kim aims to show North Koreans his resolve to hold another round of hereditary power transition, Yoo Sang-bum, one of the lawmakers who attended the private NIS briefing, told reporters.

Stars & Stripes

You can read more at the link, but I think he is showing off his daughter to make him look like a nice family man to rehab his image before any future potential talks.

Why is Kim Jong-un Making Appearances with His Daughter?

Little Kim was recently out with her father Big Kim again:

Photo, released by the Korean Central News Agency on Nov. 27, 2022, shows North Korean leader Kim Jong-un (front, R) with his daughter during a photo session with officials involved in this month’s intercontinental ballistic missile launch.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un made a second public appearance with his daughter during a photo session with officials involved in this month’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch, state media said Sunday.

Photos published by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) showed the daughter, presumed to be Kim’s second child, Ju-ae, dressed in a long black winter coat with a fur collar and with her hair partially tied back, as she walked hand in hand or linking arms with her father.

Yonhap

You can read more at the link, but some of the speculation I have read is that Kim Jong-un is show casing his daughter now to set her up for succession. She is believed to be 10 years old so I find it hard to believe she is being set up for succession at that age.

I think it is more likely that Kim is using his daughter to soften his image in preparation for any future negotiations. His sister has long been playing the bad cop with bombastic language and threats while Kim Jong-un is the good cop where he speaks more measured and is mostly smiling in photo ops.
