Justice Minister Suspends Korea’s Prosecutor General; Is It Because He Has Become too Popular?

Since Yoon Seok-youl topped polls as the preferred next President of Korea, the Korean left has gone into overdrive to destroy him:

Yoon Seok-youl

Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae on Tuesday suspended Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl from his duty, in an unprecedented move amid a feud over prosecution reforms and various investigations involving Yoon’s aide and family members.

“The ministry has been investigating various allegations against the top prosecutor and found out some serious misconduct,” the justice minister said during a briefing.

As reasons to bar him from his duty and seek disciplinary actions, the minister cited what she called an “improper” meeting with media executives, the inspection of judges involved in controversial cases and interference with the prosecution’s investigations to protect people close to him. Also she said Yoon had impeded the ministry’s lawful probe by not responding to recent written investigation inquiries.

“As the justice minister, who has the utmost authority to oversee the prosecution, I decided that it is not tolerable to let him continue his duty,” Choo said.

Shortly after the surprise announcement, Yoon called it “unfair” and said he would take legal action.

You can read more at the link, but everyone should not forget that Yoon was appointed by President Moon and has had a falling out with the administration because he would not stop the investigations into Blue House corruption.

Ever since then they have been trying everything they can to get him to resign since he is the only person standing in the way of the Blue House completely taking over the prosecution and thus protecting their political allies.

This response from the leader of the ruling Democratic Party shows that is exactly what this is:

Following the announcement, Rep. Lee Nak-yon, the chief of the ruling Democratic Party, said he was “shocked and disappointed” by the allegations raised against the top prosecutor. Lee urged Yoon to decide his position, apparently pressuring him to step down.

This is the tried and true tactic of throwing allegations at someone and then using the media to trash him in hopes it is enough pressure to get him to resign. We will see if this works with Yoon or not.

Yoon Seok-youl Tops Polls as Preferred Next President of South Korea

This news is only going to further motivate the Korean left to destroy Yoon Seok-youl:

Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl has surpassed political heavyweights from the ruling Democratic Party (DP) to rank top in the latest popularity poll of prospective presidential candidates released Wednesday.

According to a survey of 1,022 people 18 years and older by pollster Hangil Research & Consulting, 24.7 percent said they support Yoon as South Korea’s next president.

Lee Nak-yon, chairman of the Democratic Party, ranked second with 22.2 percent, while Gyeonggi Province Gov. Lee Jae-myung, also affiliated with the party, came next with an approval rate of 18.4 percent, the poll said.

It is the first time that Yoon has topped the list of prospective presidential candidates in polls.

Prosecutor General Rises to Third in National Popularity of ROK Presidential Candidates

This is all the more reason why the ruling party is trying to take out Yoon Seok-youl, he is getting too popular with the Korean public for his anti-corruption stances:

Yoon has become a leading prospect of the opposition bloc to run for the presidency according to recent polls on potential candidates. Yonhap

Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl has become a leading prospective candidate of the opposition for the 2022 presidential election, with his favorability rate rising and exceeding other potential contenders.

Some members of the opposition parties say Yoon’s rise will help them get a fresh and strong presidential candidate. But others say Yoon’s presence is disrupting the conservative bloc as other potential candidates are not receiving attention and are being overshadowed by him.

The legitimacy of Yoon’s candidacy for the conservatives is also in question as he has led investigations into corruption scandals involving former Presidents Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye.

According to a survey conducted on 1,032 adults by local pollster RnSearch from Oct. 25 to 26, Yoon had a support rate of 15.1 percent, behind two candidates of the ruling party ― Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myung with 22.8 percent, and ruling Democratic Party of Korea Chairman Lee Nak-yon with 21.6 percent.

Although he came in third, the support for Yoon is considerably higher than those for other prospective candidates of the opposition ― Rep. Hong Joon-pyo, former head of the Liberty Korea Party, a predecessor of the current main opposition People Power Party (PPP), who gained 6.8 percent, and Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the minor opposition People’s Party, at 5.8 percent.

Moon Administration Goes After Prosecutor General’s Wife to Pressure Him to Resign

It appears that the Korean left is going all in to get Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl resign:

The gaping political rift between Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae and Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl widened further Monday, as the minister accused the top prosecutor of overstepping his bounds during a parliamentary audit of the Supreme Prosecutors Office held last week.

“For the prosecutor general who must maintain political neutrality, I believe some of his statements crossed the line. As a person in the supervisory position, I’m embarrassed,” said Choo during a parliamentary audit of the justice ministry held at the National Assembly.

Last week, Choo ordered the top prosecutor to recuse himself from the investigation into the high-profile financial fraud case surrounding Lime Asset Management, citing a failure on the part of Yoon to conduct a thorough investigation into opposition politicians and prosecutors allegedly implicated in the case.

Yoon instantly accepted the order but described it as “illegal” and “absurd” during a parliamentary audit session Thursday. He also claimed that President Moon Jae-in asked him to serve out his term via an “appropriate messenger” despite pressure from the ruling bloc for him to resign.

Yonhap

The article goes on to say how the Justice Minister is expanding her attempts to go after Yoon’s wife:

The prosecution is also currently looking into allegations that Yoon’s wife was involved in manipulating stocks in Deutsch Motors and that her art exhibition company took bribes disguised as donations.

What is incredible about this whole political strife is that President Moon is the one who appointed Yoon as the Prosecutor General to be a fair arbiter of justice. That is exactly what Yoon did when he decided to prosecute Moon’s BFF Cho Kuk for the corrupt activities that him and his family were involved in.

Everything that has been happening since then has been payback to try and get Yoon to resign which he has refused to do. Remember this is not the first time the Moon administration has been willing to go after someone’s wife to get their way.

Justice Minister Turns Sights on Prosecutor General’s Wife

The Moon administration has been trying to find ways to get Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl to resign since he will not go along with covering for corrupt ruling party politicians. This could be another attempt to pressure him to quit by going after his wife:

This photo shows Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae arriving at her office in Gwacheon, south of Seoul, on Oct. 19, 2020.

Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae ordered the nation’s top prosecutor on Monday to take his hands off the ongoing investigations into a high-profile fund scandal in a move she claims is intended to ensure a “fair” and “independent” probe into those cases.

The unusual order came a day after the justice ministry raised speculation that Prosecutor-General Yoon Seok-youl failed to conduct a thorough investigation into opposition politicians and prosecutors allegedly implicated in the case.

“It is necessary to guarantee a fair and independent investigation into the Lime case and the case involving the prosecutor-general’s family,” Choo said, directing the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office and the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors Office to not follow Yoon’s orders and only report the results of the investigations to him.

Lime Asset Management Co. is suspected of covering up massive losses and subsequently suspending fund redemption worth an estimated 1.6 trillion won (US$1.39 billion).

Kim Bong-hyun, a key suspect in the case, has alleged that he bribed a former senior aide to President Moon Jae-in, and also lobbied influential opposition politicians and incumbent prosecutors.

“The possibility of the prosecutor-general’s involvement in determining the truth behind the Lime case cannot be completely removed,” Choo said.

The Supreme Prosecutors Office (SPO) responded in a statement that Yoon has “become unable” to orchestrate the investigation into the Lime case.

On the case involving his family, the SPO said Yoon was never involved or briefed on the investigation and therefore had no comment to make.

The prosecution is looking into allegations that Yoon’s wife was involved in manipulating stocks in Deutsch Motors and that her company took bribes disguised as donations.

Choo’s directive calls on the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors Office to remove a prosecutor and investigator from the team in charge of the Lime case following allegations they were lobbied by Kim.

Yonhap

You can read more at the link, but the people now running the investigation are all allies of Choo Mi-ae, so it is pretty clear how this “investigation” against Yoon’s wife will turn out.

Always remember that Korea is a rule by law country and not a rule of law country.

ROK Prosecutor General Delays Moon Administration Attempt to Exonerate Corrupt Former Prime Minister

The last person remaining that can delay the Korean left’s attempt to completely take over prosecuting powers is Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl. The Moon administration is trying to rehabilitate the image of former corrupt Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook by appointing a judge with deep ties to to disgraced former Justice Minister Cho Kuk to look into it. ROK Heads may remember that Cho is good friends with Moon, so it is likely anyone with ties to him will provide investigation results favorable to Han Myeong-sook. Yoon has been delaying the investigation much to the ire of the Korean left:

President Moon Jae-in on Monday urged his justice minister and the prosecutor general to stop fighting each other and cooperate to complete reform of the prosecution.

“Last week, the Ministry of Justice and the prosecution each launched task-force teams to protect human rights during criminal procedures,” Moon said during his opening remarks at a Blue House policy meeting that included both top officials. “Since the two powerful organs willingly started the initiatives, they must cooperate with each other and prepare a bold reform measure to make the people feel actual changes.”

Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl has been facing growing pressures from the ruling party to step down for his constant discord with Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae.

Moon stressed the importance of cooperation as the friction between Yoon and Choo reached a new peak last week amid disagreements over an ongoing investigation into the prosecutors’ handling of a 2010 corruption probe into former Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook.

On May 29, Yoon reassigned the case to the human rights monitoring office of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office. The investigation is reviewing prosecutors’ suspected coercion of a witness to testify against Han, and was originally assigned to the more independent and powerful Inspection Headquarters of the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office.

Led by Han Dong-soo, a former judge appointed by Choo’s predecessor Cho Kuk, the Inspection Headquarters has the power to request warrants, conduct raids and detain suspects, unlike the human rights monitoring office. Han Dong-soo has also argued that his team should be in charge of the internal probe.

During a National Assembly hearing last week, Choo said Yoon’s assignment was a mistake. She then ordered the Inspection Headquarters to directly question key witnesses instead of waiting for the human rights office’s findings.

Report Claims Korean Prosecutor General Linked to Sex Scandal

This is very interesting because the current Prosecutor General was appointed by the Moon administration just this past July:

Yoon Seok-youl

Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl denied a media report linking him to an infamous sex party hosted by construction contractor Yun Jung-cheon, senior prosecution officials told the JoongAng Ilbo on Friday.

The Hankyoreh newspaper on Thursday published a report saying the prosecution, during its reinvestigation of a sex scandal involving former Vice Justice Minister Kim Hak-eui, obtained testimony from Yun that Yoon also received sexual favors at his private villa in Gangwon, but did not look into it.

Yoon’s name appeared in the records of the initial investigation into the sex scandal in 2013, but prosecutors reinvestigating the case this year did nothing about it, according to the report by a journalist from the newspaper’s affiliated weekly magazine Hankyoreh 21.

Joong Ang Ilbo

You can read more at the link, but for those that don’t know, the Hankyoreh is a left wing publication which means the report on Yoon was an intentional attack from the left on someone the Blue House appointed.

This could mean that the Blue House is using the Hankyoreh report to try and pressure the Prosecutor General to squash the investigation into the ROK Justice Minister, Cho Kuk for corruption.
